Curated learning

My project is based on creating a learning environment for post-grads or older adults who crave a space to learn and build skills without being in an academic setting. Inherently collaborative art learning helps build communities and creates a safe space for self-expression.

The main questions that I will explore in my paper are: How do we make art-making accessible outside of an academic setting for post-college individuals? I will also address the sub-question: What does accessibility look like in a community setting? And how does collaborative learning build community?

Exploring organizations led me to Art Start, BRIC, and the Brooklyn Arts Council. Each offers a variety of art-making opportunities for different age groups. Art Start targets teenagers and young adults wanting to explore the art world. BRIC offers art-making programs for K-12 schools, teenagers interested in photography, and, lastly, art and media classes for all ages at low to no cost. The Brooklyn Arts Council has a unique program for older individuals called Creative Aging, which brings practicing artists into assisted living facilities to create art with those individuals. One article I enjoyed was Collaborative Art: A Transformational Force within Communities. It highlights the essential steps and needs for creating a collaborative art-making space and fostering open dialogue on complex topics.
