Lessons and Student Work
The Clarion School
(3rd and 4th grade)
Lesson One: Water Color Mixing
Students created different shades of cool colors and used the paint to make variations of shapes from geometric to organic.
Lesson Two: Self Portraits
Students used watercolor crayons and watercolor to create a fun and unique self-portrait after practicing proportions in the human face.

Lesson One: Pigeon Collages
Students created a painted paper collage of a pigeon of their choosing. They sketched the pose, painted a variety of textures using tempera and acrylic paints, cut their layers working from small to large, and glued them together.
Lesson Two: Pigeon Memes
Students made pigeon memes for an offshoot lesson to support their collages. They first picked a funny picture of a pigeon and then wrote meme-worthy text on top.

The Boerum Hill School for International Studies
(6th grade)
Lesson One: Book Cover Redesign
Students picked one of their favorite books they have read and redesigned the cover to improve it from the original. We learned about the principles of design and implemented those into their work.
Lesson Two: Story Making
Students began the process of making their own stories starting off with the basics of who, what, where, and when. They picked a genre to focus on with their stories to help guide their writing. After this lesson, they storyboarded and drew out their spreads.

(Middle School Portfolio)
Lesson One: Food Still-Life
Students created a food still-life of their favorite foods. They used reference images to keep the imagery consistent and started from larger shapes and worked their way to small shapes. They developed their shadows and mark making to make them look dimensional.
Lesson Two: Print Self-Portrait
Students created print self-portraits using styrofoam printing blocks. We relearned proportions and applied them to drawn portraits. Using mirrors, we deepened their observational skills and pushed them to look closer when drawing. They transferred their drawings to their blocks and used their mark-making skills to create shadows and highlights. They did several variations of their prints, exploring the medium at their own pace.
Lesson Three: Watercolor Landscape
Students made a watercolor landscape of Pratt's campus. Using reference images (it rained every Saturday, so we couldn’t go outside), they began with a loose underdrawing of their landscape images. They then made simple washes of colors to block everything in and developed their deeper tones to create shadows. They worked from foreground to background to make sure everything was layered properly.
